Tip of the day
If you are considering an area rug or a patterned carpet, shop for it first. It will make a major statement and is a natural focal point for the room. Pick your paint last since that is an easily customized design element.

Comfort & Safety

Carpet is comfortable, but did you know it is also one of the safest and cleanest floorings for you home? Read on – carpet is not only comfortable underfoot; it will actually make your home a safer and more pleasant environment.

Carpet improves indoor air quality by holding on to dust, allergens and other household dirt that naturally settle from the air. Unlike hard surface floorings, where dust is kicked-up and re-circulated into the air every time they're walked on, the thousands of fibers in each carpet tuft entangle these particles until a vacuum loosens and removes them. This is especially important in the winter, when our homes are shut tight and air quality is at a premium. So unless you are able to dust everyday (and who is?), carpet is a good bet if you are concerned about the air quality in your home.

Carpet provides added traction that can prevent slips and falls, and minimize injuries. The nubby surface texture of carpet acts as adhesive friction that lightly grabs the bottom of your feet. Compared to other floorings, carpet successfully prevents more slips and falls around the house 1. For older folks and kids, carpet can provide a heightened sense of safety in especially precarious areas of the home, like stairways. And if a fall is imminent, the combination of soft carpet pile and thick pad underneath can reduce the chances of a serious injury, prevent many scrapes and cuts, and minimize bruising.

Carpet absorbs sound, making your home quieter and cozier. Of course, carpet dampens the sound of footsteps throughout rooms and stairways, but it also minimizes other household noises – barking dogs, screaming children and running appliances. Carpet prevents these sounds from bouncing of the walls, which can create echoes and background noise 2. In fact, studies have shown that "there is a pronounced 'hush' in carpeted rooms" 3. And, as anyone who has lived in an older home knows: carpet also muffles the sound of creaking floorboards.

Carpet insulates the floor, so walking on it is warmer and more comfortable. We all know that walking on carpet in bare feet is warm and toasty, even on the coldest days. (Who can say the same for other types of flooring?) Carpet also reduces foot-fatigue and can take some of the natural shock of walking away from your ankles, knees and back.

To sum up: carpet enhances your home...and your everyday life. Choosing carpet is more than just an expression of style. It's really an investment in your family. What other flooring does so much to enhance the comfort and safety of your home?
